Mohair upholstery: where craft and comfort meet colour

Onyx marries the natural opulence of mohair velvet with unique two-tone colour combinations, offering a surprising twist on a timeless luxury upholstery fabric.
As its name suggests, Onyx evokes the allure of gemstones – both in its radiant palette and its intrinsic richness. Its 16 distinctive two-tone colourways are created during the dyeing process through the interplay of the materials in its pile composition: 70% mohair and 30% cotton.

Crafted colours with dappled depth
Like a fine fragrance, each textile carries different ‘notes’: a softer, overall shade paired with a brighter accent tone. Starting from a natural woven mohair base, the textile experiences an almost magical unveiling of colour. In a single bath containing two dyestuffs, the mohair absorbs the main, more subdued hue, while the cotton bonds with the saturated accent colour. The result is a series of crafted colourways with dappled depth – lapis lazuli touched with fire opal, emerald speckled with rose quartz, topaz set against sapphire.
Dynamic shifting shades
Onyx truly comes to life when applied to furniture. As the fabric moves, it reveals a spectrum of shifting shades, while its natural sheen lends a luminous glow that enhances the interplay of ever-changing tones. It picks up and interacts with light in interiors, creating added depth and dynamism.

Natural warmth and well-being
With its exceptionally high pile and sumptuous density, Onyx delivers warmth, tactility and comfort while bringing a sense of luxury to interiors. Beyond its rich appearance, mohair velvet enhances well-being by helping to regulate indoor climates and absorb sound for more serene environments. Combined with full flame retardancy, these qualities make Onyx a perfect fit for five-star and boutique hotels, upscale restaurants, high-end residences and opera houses. Like Vescom’s other luxurious textiles, such as silk wallcovering, the subtle lustre of Onyx is inherent to the material itself – no additional finishes are required – aligning with luxury’s evolution from glitz and glamour towards natural comfort.

A beautiful natural resource
Sustainably crafted by experts
For decades, Vescom has led the way in weaving mohair velvet fabrics – a highly specialized skill. The complex weaving and dyeing process takes place in Vescom’s 100% owned weaving mill in the Netherlands. Once woven, the mohair velvets are piece-dyed and washed – the final steps in Vescom’s respectful, minimal-intervention approach to this beautiful natural resource. Cradle to Cradle® Bronze certified, the fabrics meet the highest sustainability and safety standards. Naturally strong yet luxuriously soft, Onyx is both long-lasting and easy to maintain.
